Principals Message
Welcome to Ethan Allen School!
Dear Ethan Allen Families,
Welcome to our school! As a school within the School District of Philadelphia, our work is guided by a shared mission: “To provide every student with the opportunity to achieve positive life outcomes in partnership with diverse families, educators, and community members who are valued and respected.”
We are proud of the resources we provide, including our full-service cafeteria, our wonderful gymnasium, and our recently upgraded classrooms. Our work is not done, but we are making significant progress! Ethan Allen’s key priorities for the year are promoting the “whole child” with a focus on social-emotional learning and improving academics in literacy, math, and science. It is important that all students attend daily, and we invite parents to partner with us to achieve the goals of the School District of Philadelphia.
Our entire team stands ready to meet and exceed your expectations this year. Join us as part of the solution to ensure that every student is cared for every day, and that each of them realizes and meets their own potential!

Our History
The Man Behind the Name
Ethan Allen (1738–1789) was a Revolutionary War hero and political leader. Born in colonial Connecticut, he grew up on the frontier and developed both practical farming skills and a passion for philosophy.
Allen became the leader of the Green Mountain Boys, a militia that played a crucial role in the fight for independence. His troops captured Fort Ticonderoga in 1775, securing an important victory for the colonists. Later captured by the British, Allen was freed in 1778 and continued to fight for freedom until the end of the war. He also wrote about his experiences and helped shape Vermont’s early government.
The Building
Ethan Allen Elementary School was built in 1930 and designed by architect Irwin T. Catharine in the Art Deco style. In 1988, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its distinctive architecture and artistic value.
